Century Old Rivalry

The rivalry between Dodgers and the Giants is more than a century old. It begun when both clubs played in New York City. It is more than a century old, and is the longest rivalry in baseball history. The rivalry gained new intensity when both franchises moved to California in 1958. The cities of Los Angeles and San Francisco have long been rival throughout the history of California.

Manager Wilbert Robinson led the team alternately called “Brooklyn Robins” to win respective pennants to reach the 1916 and 1920 World Series They lost to the Boston Red Sox on 1916, 4-1. They lost to Cleveland Indians in 1920.

On April 15, 1947 Jackie Robinson played his first major league game as a member of the Brooklyn Dodgers. He became the first African American to play for a Major League Baseball team.

The Dodgers entered the 2006 playoffs in the National League’s Wild Card spot. They faced the New York Mets in the 2006 National League Division where they eventually swept, 3-0.

In 2007, the Dodgers had a record of 54-41, then the best record in the National League but fell to 60-59. They were seven games out of first place in the National League West. The Dodgers were able to improve their standing to 79-69 record with three weeks left in the season. They were trailing the San Diego Padres by 1 1/2 games in the wild card slot. They lost 10 of their next 11 games, which eliminated them from post season play. They finished the season with a disappointing 82-80 record.

The Dodgers clinched the 2008 National League Western Division title on September 25 as the Arizona Diamondbacks were eliminated by losing to the St. Louis Cardinals 12-3. On October 4, 2008 they beat the Cubs 3-0 to sweep the 2008 NLDS and moved on to the NLCS, where they faced the Philadelphia Phillies and were eliminated, losing the series 4-2.

The Cincinnati Reds of Major League Baseball trace their roots to 1882 when they were a charter member of the 19th-century major league American Association (AA).

After spending eight years in the AA, the Reds took their act to the National League in 1890 and currently play in the NL Central Division. The name ?Reds? was inspired by baseball?s first openly all-pro team, the Cincinnati Red Stockings, which was founded in 1863. Dusty Baker currently field manages the Reds with Walt Jocketty as general manager. The club has been playing its homes games since 2003 at the modern Great American Ball Park, which stands beside where the club?s former home, Riverfront Stadium, used to be.

Important moments and accomplishments

In their more than 100 years of existence the Reds have enjoyed good success. They won the inaugural AA season in 1882 and thereafter won the World Series five times ? 1919, 1940, 1975, 1976 and 1990. They have made the postseason 12 times and won NL pennants 10 times.

The 1930s are an important period for the club as it saw the Reds come out of bankruptcy brought about by The Great Depression. The Crosley brothers, Powel and Lewis, bought the Reds and made the club a contender once again. Before the end of the decade the Reds were back in top form and come 1940 beat the Detroit Tigers en route to winning their second World Series title.

For a brief time in the 1950s, the Reds were forced to change their name to the ?Redlegs,? no thanks to the arrival of the Red Scare during the period. The owners felt that the name ?Reds? might be associated with communism which at that time was growing in popularity. Eventually the team reverted to the ?Reds? at the start of the next decade.

The ?60s ushered in the advent of future stars for the Reds. Jim Maloney, Pete Rose, Tony Perez, Johnny Bench and Gary Nolan were some of the players who came on board and team up with future Hall-of-Famer Frank Robinson.

The 1970s though could be considered as the team?s best period in the Majors. During this time the Reds piled winning records in all but one year (1971) in the disco years. Bannered by a team that was fittingly called ?The Big Red Machine,? the Reds made the decade a time to remember for the franchise as they won back-to-back World Series titles in 1975 and 1976, and won NL pennants four times.

The ?80s were a down time for the Reds that saw them struggle, highlighted by numerous controversies, notably the banning of legend Rose by the MLB for his involvement in gambling. But as has been customary for the club, the Reds rose again from obscurity to take their fifth World Series championship in 1990.

They are training their sights on improving their offense, possibly a right-hand hitter, who could deliver the goods consistently for the team. Jocketty and the Reds are mulling going the way of free agency but are also considering player acquisitions via direct trades.

Starting all over again may prove downright messy and ugly at times. But the Reds throughout their existence have shown the ability to rise from the ashes. And with a young nucleus that has so much potential, the future for the Reds looks bright.

The Houston Astros are members of Major League?s National League Central Division. The club joined the MLB at the same time as the New York Mets in 1962.

The Astros were known then as the Colt .45s, a name that came about after a “name the team” contest was held. The club became the Astros three years later in 1965. Current Astros owner is Drayton McLane, Jr. with Cecil Cooper the manager of the club and Ed Wade the general manager. The team calls the Minute Maid Park as its home field.

Important moments and accomplishments

The Astros were more popularly known early in their existence for their home field, the Astrodome. Fondly called the ?Eighth Wonder of the World? at the time, the Astrodome was an indoor ball park envisioned by former Houston owner Judge Roy Hofheinz. Many attributed the Astrodome, and its artificial turf known as the “Astro Turf” since grass wouldn?t grow inside the dome, as changing the way how baseball was watched by the entire league since it was erected in the 1960s.

Eventually, the Astros became known for their on-field play, in particular in the 1980s, when they experienced more team success, with the help of future Hall-of-Famers Nolan Ryan and Joe Morgan who both infused much-needed leadership to the team. During the decade, Houston barged into the play-offs for the first time and won the NL West title by edging the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Astros finished with a 93-77 record that year. The club, however, lost to the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League Championship Series but not after putting a tough fight. To date, the Astros-Phillies series of 1980 is considered one of the best postseason matchups in baseball history. The Astros followed this up with postseason appearances in 1981 and 1986.

The 1990s were also memorable for the Houston franchise as this was the time many changes happened for the team. The Astros by this time were bannered by the likes of Jeff Bagwell and Craig Biggio. New owner McLane took over the team in 1993 and along with his arrival came more success as the Astros won consecutive division titles in 1997, 1998 and 1999.

At the turn of the new millennium, the Astros move out of the Astrodome and settled to its new and current stadium, which was known then as Enron Field. The ballpark features a retractable roof which many believe is very functional for a place like Houston.

But the single biggest season for the Astros came in 2005 when they finally went over the hump and made their way to their first-ever World Series. Despite starting the season poorly, going 15 games below .500 by late May that year, Houston fashioned out an amazing winning run and went 42-17 thereafter to take the lead for the wild-card. They eventually won a wild-card berth on the final day of the regular season. In the National League Division Series the Astros defeated the Atlanta Braves in four games. Houston then beat the St. Louis Cardinals in the NLCS in seven games, avenging their loss to the Cards in the 2004 NLCS, to win their first-ever pennant. The Astros met the Chicago White Sox in the World Series. But Houston fell short as they were swept by the White Sox 4-0.

This is part of the approved deal which involves the building of Marlins Ballpark, at the site of Miami Orange Bowl that used to be just for football. The Pittsburgh Pirates are members of the National League Central Division in Major League Baseball. The period from 1901-1903 was the time when the Pirates dominated the National League. They, however, lost the first modern World Series to the Boston Red Sox in 1903. But the Pirates never stopped improving and dominating until finally reaching the summit in 1909 when they won their first-ever World Series title, beating the Detroit Tigers in seven games.

The club reached nirvana once again in 1925 when they dispatched the Washington Senators in the Fall Classic in come-from-behind fashion, bucking a 3-1 deficit. The Pirates tried to duplicate the feat in 1927 but was stopped by the New York Yankees.

It took a while before Pittsburgh once again reached the apex of success. In 1960, bannered by Roberto Clemente, Dick Groat, Bill Mazeroski and pitchers Vern Law, Bob Friend and Elroy Face, the Pirates exacted payback on the Yankees, pulling the rags from under New York in Game Seven. The 1960 team was also special as the team had eight representatives in the All-Star Game. The team had roller-coaster campaigns after their 1960 triumph.

The ?70s proved to be a banner period for the Pirates. They opened the decade by winning their first of five division titles over the next seven years (1970, 1971, 1972, 1974 and 1975). In ?71, they claimed their fourth World Series title. Tragedy struck the squad in 1972 when star hitter Clemente died in a plane crash while delivering relief goods to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. The Pirates closed out the decade by winning their last of five titles in 1979, beating the Baltimore Orioles in seven games. The year also saw the Pirates sweep all the available MVP awards — All-Star MVP was Dave Parker; NLCS, World Series and NL MVP was Willie Stargell. With its pitching staff among the league?s worst in much of the statistical areas in the 2008 season, the Pirates have hired Joe Kerrigan as pitching coach to replace Jeff Andrews, who was with the club for only a year. Kerrigan served the Yankees as bullpen coach from 2006-2007. Prior to that he was part the Philadelphia Phillies pitching staff (2003-04) and the Red Sox (1997-2001). While with Boston, Kerrigan?s pitching crew compiled a record of 823-687. The Pirates hope that with Kerrigan?s experience and teaching skills, he?ll be able to help improve their pitching staff which compiled a Major League-low 33 wins (starting staff) and a National League-worst 5.36 ERA.

On rebuilding mode once again following the departure of veteran players, the Pirates franchise maybe in for new challenges. But as all good things must start somewhere, Pittsburgh fans could only expect things to get better for their favorite team.

Based in Atlanta, Georgia, United States - The Atlanta Braves are a professional baseball team formed in 1870 and was originally called as the Boston Red Stockings. The team is a member of Major League Baseball’s National Team (Eastern Division). In 1871, the team emerged as one of the National League’s nine charter members.

It has been regarded as the team that is constant in the field because out of twenty eight teams, only the Braves has managed to field a team in every season Major League Baseball has been.

To identify themselves from the American League’s Cincinnati Red Stockings, the Boston Red Stockings (who became the Boston Red Caps in 1876) changed their name into Beaneaters in 1883. Media came up with nicknames such as Doves (1907) and Rustlers (1911); the team became the Braves in 1912 for the first time. The name of the team changed to Boston Bees on 1936, and in 1941 they reemerged as Boston Braves. In 1953, they became the Milwaukee Braves, and finally in 1966 the baseball team became known as the Atlanta Braves.

Important Moments and Accomplishments

The Atlanta Braves earned a total of three World Series titles as champions. In 1914, as the Boston Braves, they beat the Philadelphia Athletics in a four-game match for the championship. In 1957, as the Milwaukee Braves, the team won four matches out of the seven games against the American League’s New York Yankees. The team earned their third championship title in the World Series in 1995 as the Atlanta Braves when they won against the Cleveland Indians after winning four matches out of the six.

This baseball team garnered 17 titles as the League Champions in National League. They won four National Association Pennants. They also became division champions, five times as the National League West Division champions, and 17 times as National League East Division Champions.

In 1974, Hank Aaron surpassed Babe Ruth’s home run mark. In 1999, the Major League Baseball introduced Hank Aaron Award as annual award to each division’s top hitter.

Atlanta Braves recent news:

Pete Van Wieren, the 10-time Georgia Sportscaster of the Year, the play-by-play broadcaster of Atlanta Braves has resigned. In 1977, he was awarded as Atlanta’s top sportscaster. He was inducted into the Braves Hall of Fame in 2004 with the late Caray.

Tommy Hanson received Fall League honor as the Pitcher of the Week in Arizona Fall League. The team earned the fourth place in 2008 season and is looking forward for the 2009 season and off-season games. For the fans of Atlanta Braves, cheer for the team as they will surely play their very best in the next season.
