About Baseball And Free Agency

Not too much data is available about the roots of baseball. It had its origin in early games that have been fine-tuned and modified to look like the present day baseball. However, there is strong evidence that baseball is very American. Like everything, baseball has also undergone a sea change since its inception. Nevertheless, certain aspects of the game, especially the basic rules, have not altered too much- A little thing here and there but not too much.

Major League Baseball (MLB) has changed to quite an extent after the birth of free agency in 1976. Since the time immemorial, the owners had total control over the players. They decided on the salaries the players would get. However, with the birth of free agency, the players had the choice of negotiating their price and choosing the team they want to play with. This made getting good players quite competitive.

Of course, the players themselves had to have the required skill and talent to demand their price. The major difference came in terms of the fact that the players had the benefit of signing contracts that are guaranteed. As a result, they would receive their salary irrespective of the fact how he played. The idea of free agency was implemented with the notion that in order to be competitive, a team needs to pay its players as per their market value. There is no logic in trying to exploit a player by paying him low salary. A disgruntled and dissatisfied player cannot in give his best. Therefore, for the benefit of the team, the owner and the nation as a whole, a player must be allowed to quote his own price. Of course, he has to prove his own mettle to get that price. Finally, it is a win-win situation for all concerned parties.

About Fantasy Baseball

Fantasy baseball is a game where players administer imaginary baseball teams based on real-life performance of baseball players on the field. The players of fantasy baseball contend against one another using the statistics of real players to gain points. It is one of the oldest forms of fantasy games.

Fantasy baseball has been around for quite sometime now. It is becoming a very popular hobby to all the American baseball fanatics. There are two kinds of fantasy baseball that are very popular – Rotiserie and Head-To-Head. In ‘Rotiserie’, the players are pitted on the basis of a point system that is based on leading offensive and pitching clusters. For instance, a 10-team league would get by a 1 to 10 point system applicable to every category. The leader of every group would get 10pts, the second 9pts, the third 8pts and similar. The points belonging to all the categories would ultimately be added to derive the total points of the team. The team gaining the maximum number of points on a given day would be the winner.

‘Head-To-Head’ depends on a weekly method where teams contend based on categories. Unlike Rotiserie, the teams compete only against another team on a weekly basis. There is a predetermined agenda. In the head-to-head system, every offensive and pitching stat result one “win”. Once the week, usually taken from Monday to Sunday, ends whichever team gets the most number of wins will be victorious.

Many sites offer fantasy baseball. The most popular ones are Yahoo, ESPN, MLB, Sporting News and similar. Among them, Yahoo! is legitimately approved by Major League Baseball to offer a full schedule of fantasy games, starting from baseball, to football, and even car racing and golf. The fun part of fantasy baseball lies in its trailing your drafted lineup on a regular basis. You also have the capability of adding and dropping players to and from the free agency pool that is usually known as waivers. You can also bargain trades with other members if you want to do so. If you are a baseball fanatic, but have never tried playing fantasy baseball, then you must venture into it at least once. This way you will realize the fun involved and like millions of other fans, you may be hooked to it.

Orioles Tickets to a Baseball Game of Frenzied Excitement

January 9th, 2009
world series tickets
Al Terry asked:

Baseball lovers are ready to give an eye and a tooth to get Orioles tickets this season. Based in Baltimore, Maryland, the Baltimore Orioles, a professional baseball team are a member of the Eastern Division of Major League Baseball’s American League. The unique name “Orioles” is the name of a bird; hence the team is also nicknamed as ‘the Birds’. Their ballpark from year 1992 till date has been the Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

Early History

The Orioles have an interesting history. Way back in 1894, they were known as the Milwaukee Brewers of Western League. The year 1902 saw the team shifting to St. Louis and becoming the St. Louis Browns. The Browns practiced in the Sportsman’s Park and the Cardinals were their arch rivals. The Browns are most remembered for their role in the race for the American League batting title in year 1910, when Coach Harry Howell tried to bribe the official scorer.

In 1916, the Browns exchanged hands, being sold to Philip DeCatesby Ball. Some of the best players then were George Sisler, Ken Williams, Baby Doll Jacobson, and Jack Tobin. In 1944, the Browns won the American League pennant but after 1945, the Browns never had another winning season in St. Louis. In 1951, Bill Veeck purchased the Browns. Shortly, starving for funds, Veeck sold the Browns to a Baltimore-based group led by Clarence Miles and Jerry Hofberger. Under them, a shift in 1954 to Baltimore gave the team a new face as the Orioles.

The New Face Of The Orioles

Baltimoreans welcomed the Orioles with open arms. They bought Orioles tickets with fervor. It took the Orioles about six years to become competitive. By the 1960s, baseball players such as Brooks Robinson, John “Boog” Powell, and Dave McNally took the team to great heights. The Orioles won their first American League championship in 1966 defeating the Los Angeles Dodgers. From 1966 to 1983, the Orioles won three World Series titles, six American League pennants, and five American League Eastern Division titles making them a highly winning baseball team. During this period, Frank Robinson, Boog Powell and Cal Ripken, Jr. were their most valuable players. Weaver Ball gave the team a further boost.

The Last Two Decades And The Orioles

But after 1983, the Orioles started on a downslide. This losing streak shocked the baseball world through the 1980s. Peter Angelos bought the Baltimore Orioles in 1993 and hired Pat Gillick as GM who brought several players like B.J. Surhoff, Roberto Alomar and Randy Myers into the team. From them on, the Orioles showed an upturn and went on the win the AL East Division title in 1997.

The GMs changed in quick succession from Frank Wren, Syd Thrift, Mike Hargrove to Lee Mazzilli. Rafael Palmeiro, Roberto Alomar, and Eric Davis were the star players of the Orioles in the 1990s. Most sports lovers bought Orioles tickets to watch them scorch the ground.

In 1999, the Orioles were the first Major League team to stage an exhibition game against the Cuban national team in Havana. A few years later, the 2005 season had an early good start but felt apart for the Orioles in the face of injuries to Luis Matos, Lopez, Sosa, Brian Roberts, and Larry Bigbie. In the 2006 season, the Orioles recorded 70 wins and a whopping 92 losses. Now too, though the 2008 season has been lacking luster, as the Yankees and Red Sox are in top form against the Orioles, fans have not yet given up. They are buying the Orioles tickets, ready to cheer the team as they play. As time is short, you can get your Orioles tickets from an online broker. Join the hot excitement of baseball with the Orioles.

Gen Wright asked:

Based in San Diego, California –The San Diego Padres is a Major League Baseball team founded in 1969 playing in the National League Western Division. They got the name of their team from the Pacific Coast League team that arrived in San Diego in the year 1936. The San Diego Padres became a member of Major League Baseball in 1969, as part of the four latest expansion teams. The original owner of the team was C. Arnholt Smith, a well-known businessperson from San Diego, who was the PCL Padres? previous owner.

Important moment and accomplishments:

The team struggled during its beginnings. The team finished last place in every game of its first six seasons in NL West. They lost one hundred games or more four times and so the franchise was sold to Ray Kroc in the year 1974. San Diego Padres went out of the National League West basement for the first time in 1975 as the team finished fourth place with a score of 71-91 record. The club set a new high with 73 wins in the year 1976 but fell into fifth place. In 1978, San Diego picked up another first by having an 84-78 score. That was the only time in ten seasons that the team finished with a winning percentage above .500 in a single season. The team suffered another losing season in 1979 with a score of 68-93 record.

Ray Kroc died of heart disease on January 14, 1984. His third wife, Joan B. Kroc, took over the ownership of the team. In 1984, The Padres won the National League West championship, finishing with a 92-70 record.

Pitchers in the current roster:

Josh Geer

Clay Hensley

Wade LeBlanc

Jake Peavy

Chad Reineke

Chris Young

San Diego Padres recent news:

In 2004, San Diego Padres finished the season with a record of 87-75. The Padres posted a 23 win-loss record improvement over the 2003 season (64-98). This is the single largest improvement in one season in the team history. The Padres moved into their new home, the PETCO Park. The ballpark drew 3,016,752 fans to 81 home games, setting a new record in attendance marks.

In 2005, San Diego Padres won the western division championship with the lowest-ever winning percentage for a division champion, 82-80, in a non-strike season. The Padres finished the season with a record of 82-83. They are the first post-season qualifier in a normal-length season to have lost more games than to have won overall.

In 2006, the Padres clinched a playoff tie up with a 3?1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. In the final game of the season, the Padres defeated the Diamondbacks 7-6 to win back-to-back division titles for the first time in team history.

In 2007, The Padres ended the regular season in an 89-73 tie for the NL wild card with the Colorado Rockies. The Padres then met the Rockies on October 1, 2007 in Denver for a one-game playoff to decide the wild card winner. The Padres’ season ended when the Rockies rallied to win 9-8.

In 2008, the team finished the season with 63?99 record on September 28 when they lost to Pittsburgh Pirates, 10?6, finishing 5th in the NL West, 21 games behind the division leader Los Angeles Dodgers.

More exciting games will surely grace San Diego Padre?s bid to win a world series in the next season. Loyal fans would like to see more of what the team has to offer as they go up against their rivals.

Say ‘o’ for Baltimore Orioles Tickets!

August 22nd, 2008
world series tickets
Al Terry asked:

Baltimore Orioles tickets are some of the hottest major league baseball tickets available today. No wonder, since the Orioles have certainly had their share of league titles in the past. Not only are the Orioles one of the oldest teams, but they also have a rich history and have given the world of baseball some really great classic players.

The Orioles are perhaps best known for their golden years in the seventies and eighties but they are still a strong team to contend with today. Though the cynics might say the Orioles aren’t what they used to be, they are certainly a team that can give stiff competition to their opponents. There’s a reason why Baltimore Orioles tickets are still in such great demand.

A Rich Beginning

The modern day Baltimore Orioles were initially known as the Milwaukee Brewers, back in 1894. In 1902, the team was shifted to St. Louis where they also got a new name, the St. Louis Browns. The Browns had what many consider a dream run, establishing themselves as one of the strongest baseball teams at that time. However the team was relocated to Baltimore in 1954, after which the team unceremoniously landed at the very bottom of the barrel.

While the Browns left behind a legacy, it was up to the new Baltimore Orioles to make a name for them selves. They certainly had a legacy to live up to however and from 1966 to 1983, the Orioles managed to rake in three World Series Titles, American League Eastern Division titles and six American League pennants. Baltimore Orioles tickets were seen as winning tickets to enjoy one of the strongest teams in the major leagues. However this trend would take a downward turn by the end of the nineties which was alternately blamed on bad management and lackluster performances on the field. Things hit rock bottom in 2005, after which huge changes were made to shake up the team and bring it back into form. Despite this slump, the public has still supported the Orioles and Baltimore Orioles tickets were still sought after. In fact, in 2006 the fans launched a ‘Free The Birds’ campaign against the team’s ownership, which they felt was affecting the team’s performance.

The Famous ‘O’

The famous battle cry for the Baltimore Orioles has always been the ‘O’, which is accented when the Star Spangled Banner is sung. This is done to highlight the Baltimore accent in pronouncing ‘O’ but in recent times it has become almost non-existent at games, mainly due to recent patriotic concerns. The Orioles also have used a number of famous songs during play, the most popular being John Denver’s ‘Thank God I’m a Country Boy’. In recent times, the team has also used ‘Elevation’ by U2.

One of the reasons why Baltimore Orioles tickets are so popular is because fans get a chance to see some world class baseball players at their best. The Orioles have a number of players in the Baseball Hall of Fame, including names like Earl Weaver, Jim Palmer, Eddie Murray and Cal Ripkin. Jr.

If you’re looking to take in some Orioles action, make sure you get your Baltimore Orioles tickets online through an authorized ticket vendor.
